The Drive blog

This is THE DRIVE Blog. It's where the entire on air team gets to post their thoughts on whatever they're thinking, no matter how screwed up they might be. And you can post your comments too, no matter how screwed up they might be. If listening to 98.9 THE DRIVE were like eating a pizza, reading THE DRIVE Blog would be a side of cheese and garlic breadsticks. In addition to having THE DRIVE on air staff in writing, you'll also find cool photos, videos, links and more that were mentioned on air. Read on!

Jayna Hefford interview with Reid

March 8th, 2010 by Reid

Kingstonian Jayna Hefford is an unbelievable hockey player…male or female. She is simply put, one of the best! Three Olympic gold medals and one silver…not to mention all the gold and silver World Championships.  Not only is she a great hockey player, she’s an ambassador to the sport, she raises money for charity through golf tournaments, and develops female hockey players of tomorrow through her hockey school she runs in Kingston every summer.  Just ask Meghan Agosta who attended it 9 years ago and now shares Olympic gold with Jayna.

I spoke with her and we chatted about the Olympics, gold medals, and, yes, the smokin’ and drinking.  I love this picture by the way.  Have a listen.

Favourite Olympic moment?

March 1st, 2010 by Ali MacLean

What a great two weeks for Canada! It’s hard to pick the number one top Olympic moment and I’m sure everyone has a different favourite, so lets hear ‘em.

For me top contenders:

  • Fans singing O’Canada during the Gold Medal game at the Men’s curling. Love the patriotism and enthusiasm!!
  • Sydney Crosby’s winning Gold Medal goal against the US. To see him rip out his mouth guard, flip the gloves off, whip his stick and the absolute excitement.
  • Canada owning the Gold Medals!!! Sure the Americans got more metals total, but as a co-worker Chris said, the states were better at coming in second and third. WOOO HOOO CANADA!!!!!

Those are my fav’s lets hear your favourite Olympic moment (or top three).

METRIC in Kingston….yesssssssssssssss!

February 26th, 2010 by Reid

We did it, we made it happen.  Last Fall when I noticed Metric was playing in Ottawa, Montreal, and Toronto but NOT Kingston, I thought…Why Not?  Eight months later, April 5th, 98.9 THE DRIVE presents Metric with The Arkells at The KRC.  Tickets go on sale Saturday at 10am at The KRC Box Office.

How did it happen?  Well, eight months ago it started with a Bring Metric To Kingston facebook page.  Then an e-mail and phone call to their radio rep.  He put me in touch with Metric’s manager who eventually agreed to an on air interview to explain WHY NOT Kingston.

Several more e-mails to the Metric management finally got me an interview with lead singer Emily Haines in December where she said they would come to Kingston in 2010.

I was a bit of a pain in the ass, but it was worth it.  And, it could not have happened without the help of every single fantastic 98.9 The Drive listener.  I am so happy about the show!  Thank you Kingston, thank you to the entire Metric team.

See you April 5th,

This week Matt takes on Colleen Ogilvie from Queen’s Women’s Volleyball.

Still More Oasis News

February 19th, 2010 by Jim Elyot

Liam Gallagher’s ex-Oasis bandmate Paul ‘Bonehead’ Arthurs has backed the singer over his controversial antics at the Brit Awards on Tuesday. Bonehead played guitar on Oasis’ 1995 album ‘What’s The Story (Morning Glory)’, with Gallagher picking up the Brits Album of 30 Years honour for it at the ceremony. The singer mentioned all his bandmates from the time except his brother Noel Gallagher in his acceptance speech, threw the award and his mic into the crowd and later feuded with host Peter Kay.

“I knew we’d won the award and I knew Liam was going along,” Bonehead told the Manchester Evening News. “I didn’t know I’d be getting a mention. I’m pleased though – I was involved in that album after all. I think good on him for chucking the award into the audience – it sums the Brits up really. I mean Lady GaGa winning? Please!”

Simon Cowell is apparently very keen to sign up Noel Gallagher to replace him as a judge on American Idol. The ex-Oasis star, however, would be in contention with US radio host Howard Stern and Piers Morgan for the role. “I know Noel quite well,” Cowell claimed. “I like him. He is very funny and a brilliant songwriter - it’s a possibility”
